Gibraltar and Liechtenstein have partnered for a special joint stamp issue celebrating the peregrine falcon (Falco peregrinus): a bird renowned for its power, speed, and grace. Regarded as the fastest animal on Earth, the peregrine falcon can reach diving speeds of over 320 km/h (200 mph) when stooping after its prey. With keen eyesight, estimated to be eight times sharper than that of humans, it hunts prey with remarkable precision.

Found on every continent except Antarctica, the peregrine falcon embodies adaptability and endurance. In Gibraltar, the species nests along the Rock’s sheer limestone cliffs, where adults can often be seen soaring above the Strait or perched on coastal ledges scanning the sea below. Its commanding presence above the gateway between Europe and Africa has made it an emblem of vigilance and strength.

In Liechtenstein, the peregrine falcon’s domain lies among alpine peaks and valleys, where it glides effortlessly on mountain thermals and nests on rocky crags high above the Rhine Valley. These contrasting habitats, sea and mountain, beautifully illustrate the bird’s global range and its ability to thrive from coastal cliffs to high altitudes.

On this occasion, each country has issued a pair of stamps portraying the peregrine falcon in its native environment: Gibraltar’s designs capture the falcon both in flight and perched atop the Rock; whilst Liechtenstein’s stamps present it soaring with elegance over alpine summits and perched with a mountain valley backdrop. Together, the four designs form a collection that unites sea and sky, north and south; two small nations linked by a shared admiration for nature.

Beyond their aesthetic appeal, the stamps carry a deeper message of resilience. Once brought to the brink of extinction in parts of Europe due to pesticide use, the peregrine falcon has made one of conservation’s greatest comebacks thanks to international protection efforts. Its resurgence stands as a testament to global cooperation, much like this joint issue, and a reminder of what can be achieved when nations work together to preserve the natural world around them.

This collaboration, which places its focus on the migration of the young peregrine falcon between the Alps and the Mediterranean, honours both wildlife and the enduring beauty of this great animal, a true symbol of speed, strength, and survival.
