Gibraltar boasts an impressive diversity of butterfly species, with a total of 609 species identified to date. This series features six butterflies, with illustrations by the renowned UK-based Wildlife Artist, Mr Jonathan Pointer. His artistic talent and meticulous attention to detail are evident in the stunning illustrations depicting the following butterfly species:

Cardinal: The cardinal butterfly (Argynnis pandora) is a strikingly colourful species found in southern Europe, North Africa, and parts of the Middle East. Known for its orange and black patterned wings, it feeds on nectar from flowers and relies on violets for its larval development.

Cleopatra:The Cleopatra butterfly (Goneptery cleopatra) is a vibrant species found in southern Europe, North Africa, and parts of Asia. Recognised for its bright yellow wings with an orange patch in males, it thrives in sunny habitats and depends on buckthorns for larval development.

Provence Orange Tip: The Provence Orange Tip (Anthocharis euphenoides) is a butterfly found in the Iberian Peninsula, southern France, and parts of Italy. Notable for its delicate lemon-yellow males and white females with black and orange wingtips, its caterpillars feed on Biscutella species and pupate on dead plant stems over winter.

Scarce Swallowtail: The Scarce Swallowtail (Iphiclides podalirius) is a large, striking butterfly native to Europe and Asia. Characterised by a wingspan of 6.5-8 cm, it has creamy white or pale yellow wings with black tiger stripes, blue crescents, and long tails. Its larvae feed on various Prunus species, and it is found in gardens, fields, and woodlands, preferring foothills and lower elevations.

Speckled Wood: The Speckled Wood (Pararge aegeria) is a medium-sized butterfly with chocolate-brown wings and creamy-yellow eye spots. Found in woodlands, gardens, and hedgerows across Europe, its caterpillars feed on various grasses, and adults primarily consume aphid honeydew.

Two-tailed Pasha: The Two-tailed Pasha (Charaxes jasius) is a large, fast-flying butterfly found in the Mediterranean region and North Africa. It features dark brown and orange upper wings with two tails on each hindwing and primarily inhabits maquis shrubland, feeding on Strawberry Tree leaves.
