Medals of Service (view technical specs)
Eighty years after the end of the Second World War, this stamp issue pays tribute to the medals awarded for courage, endurance, and sacrifice. Gibraltar, with its unique strategic role, stood at the heart of Britain’s wartime operations. These medals not only commemorate those who fought across land, sea, and air, but also recognise the vital contributions of Gibraltarians, both military and civilian, in one of history’s defining conflicts.
The Defence Medal - Awarded for non-operational service in areas subjected to air attack or close threat, the Defence Medal was highly relevant to Gibraltar. Both military personnel and civilians on the Rock qualified, in recognition of their vital roles in sustaining defence operations, enduring raids, and supporting civil defence. Gibraltar’s strategic position made it indispensable to Britain’s wartime infrastructure, and this medal honours that steadfast contribution.
The Atlantic Star - This medal recognised six months of operational service in the Atlantic or Home Waters between 1939 and 1945. Gibraltar was a key naval base during the Battle of the Atlantic, serving as a convoy assembly point and escort station. Naval personnel operating from the Rock were instrumental in safeguarding Allied shipping routes from U-boat threats. The Atlantic Star commemorates the endurance and bravery of all who served in this unforgiving theatre.
The Africa Star - Awarded for operational service in North Africa between 10 June 1940 and 12 May 1943, the Africa Star reflects Gibraltar’s vital role as a military and naval base. From logistics to operational support, Gibraltar was a launch point for Allied forces engaged in desert campaigns. This medal honours those who fought in North Africa and acknowledges the Rock’s contribution to eventual victory.
The France and Germany Star - Given for service in France, Belgium, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, or Germany between D-Day (6 June 1944) and VE Day (8 May 1945), this medal commemorates the liberation of Western Europe. While the battles unfolded further north, Gibraltar remained an active Allied base throughout the campaign, supporting logistics and troop movements. The France and Germany Star honours all who advanced freedom across Europe and recognises the Rock’s enduring strategic role.
The Arctic Star - The Arctic Star was awarded for operational service north of the Arctic Circle between 1939 and 1945. Naval and Merchant Navy personnel earned it through perilous convoy duties, while aircrew qualified after a single sortie over the region. It honours those who faced extreme conditions on Arctic convoys — some of the most hazardous missions of the war.
The War Medal 1939-1945 - Presented to full-time Armed Forces and Merchant Navy personnel who served at least 28 days between 1939 and 1945, the War Medal acknowledged the service of millions. Regardless of role or location, this medal represents the collective effort of all who contributed to victory in the Second World War.
